He Is Us

10 05 2006

The story about the top levels of the U.S. Border Batrol is acting like a fifth column, tipping off the Mexican government to Minuteman Project patrol locations, informing them on Minuteman Project activities in non-border states, as well as instructing ground level agents not to give credit to Minuteman volunteers, has been covered all over the right wing blogosphere.

One plausible and lame excuse that the Border Patrol is giving for its perfidy is that the 1963 Vienna Convention requires one government to notify the consulate of the government of the home country of illegal aliens apprehended.  However, the Minuteman Project explicitly prohibits its border volunteers from apprehending illegal aliens, it only reports sightings of illegal aliens and border jumpers to Border Patrol agents.  Therefore, the Vienna Convention is moot here.

Otherwise, all I have to say is this:

We have seen the enemy, and he is us.
