Rumors and Reputation

18 08 2006

Question raised in E-Mail Battles today and about 50,000 other places:

Why is Windows dominating the desktop?

I could add to it that Microsoft used to have (and might still have) anti-competitive clauses that computer manufacturers (OEMs, Original Equipment Mfgrs., in compspeak) that prohibit the mfgrs. from selling or advertising the sale of any systems other than those pre-installed with Windows, or even prohibit mfgrs. from selling systems with no operating system, so that the purchaser can self-install one of his or her choosing.

Also, Microsoft’s FUD (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt) campaigns contribute.  Considering the truism that malicious rumors and reputations are already halfway around the world before the truth has the chance to strap its boots on, many people who are cognizant that there are viable OSes (operating systems) other than Windows still believe that weaknesses that did exist in alternatives five to ten years ago still exist, when they really don’t anymore.
