Post-Dispatch vs Mardi Gras

19 02 2007

Mayor Slay is complaining about Post-Dispatch sensationalism about this past Saturday’s Soulard Mardi Gras; the Post called it the “worst ever,” as if previous ones were bad.  Slay has good reason to complain, as Mardi Gras is a big date on the St. Louis City social calendar in one of those highly yuppified and gentrified neighborhoods that Slay uses as an example of his mayoral prowess.

But why would the Post-Dispatch, which has similar hopes for the city, diss Soulard Mardi Gras so?

I have a theory.  A few weeks ago, a frequent reader of this space told me that one of the untold virtues of Soulard Mardi Gras is that it’s overwhelmingly white, with very few racial minorities.

Perhaps that’s the problem the Post has with SMG, that it’s not diverse enough.
