RP’s Red States

16 10 2007

Number of Ron Paul donors per capita by state, from original research done by Patrick Ruffini.  The redder the state, the higher the number of donors per capita.

That the Mountain West is reddest is of no surprise, based on RP’s conservative-libertarian track record.  Why New England (esp. NH) is strongly red is beyond me; perhaps RP’s conservative anti-war non-interventionism appeals to the anti-war left.  But that can’t be it, because Iowa (historically a New England state in the Midwest) and Illinois are only light red.

Of great interest to me, as a CofCC member, is the pale white color of Mississippi and three of its neighbors.  RP’s weakness in the Deep South is not surprising to me, bolstering my thesis that Ron Paul is not Theodore Bilbo.  What does cause me grief, though, is the fact that so many of our people seem to think that he’s akin to the Second Coming, and our people are concentrated in Southern states that are either pale or very light red.

Another mystery to me is Arizona.  It’s acutely under the Mexican gun, and Ron Paul, at least compared to Tom Tancredo and Ron Paul, is weak and wobbley on the immigration issue, opposing immigration control measures for civil liberties concerns, and opposing the military on the border due to Posse Comitatus.  Why all this enthusiasm for him there, when there are two other candidates who would make their situation better?
