Miscellany

Various photos from the St. Louis contingent at the 2008 CofCC National Conference in Sheffield, Alabama last weekend.

Chubby’s — Still in Hayti, Missouri, and tastier than it has ever been.  But it might not be owned by Pemiscot County Sheriff Tommy Greenwell anymore.  We’ll get back to you on that.

We bought along extra Chubby’s sandwiches, refrigerated them, and then consumed them the next day.  Spot the two sandwich eaters in this photo.

Good job, slappy.  Karaoke Sinatra’s “New York, New York” in front of a bunch of Alabamians.

I get to play Scott Fybush.  This is the tower that radiates 1,000 watts of Contemporary Christian music on 1290 AM, from the facilities of WBTG-AM, to the denizens of the Shoals area.  You might have guessed that the station was Christian because the “T” on the tower was a Cross.  Since it’s right across the street from the hotel, I’m guessing that patrons can get very good reception of WBTG.

And you thought the Poplar Street Bridge was bad because it carries I-55, 64, 70 and US 40.

This bridge, which carries all those routes above, crosses the Tennessee River, between Florence and Sheffield.  It doesn’t appear that the Tennessee RIver is very high.  Unlike certain rivers we all live close to.

Some of those six routes diverge once you get into Florence proper.  And why not?  Who wants to look at Google Maps and find out you have to take 43/72/13/17/20/157 for 38 miles to go somewhere?

Like St. Louis, Florence, Alabama has a law that there must be a Walgreens where there is a perpendicular intersection of major avenues.

The Harvard of the Shoals, or as the rest of us call it, the University of North Alabama.

I don’t know about that, but pickled cucumbers are one of my favorite foods.  As you can guess, barbecued pulled pork shoulder is way up there, as well.

James and Dani Edwards won the grand attendance prize, donated by Patroitc Flags of Charleston, South Carolina.  It may not be the world’s largest Confederate Flag, but it’s probably the largest Confederate flag they own.

I know how you feel.  The CofCC National Conference is very enlightening for your mind, but can be pretty hard on your feet.  Meanwhile, yours truly just had to pick this weekend to break in a new pair of patent leather dress shows.  I still have the blisters.
