U.S. regulatory czar nominee wants Net ‘Fairness Doctrine’
Cass Sunstein sees Web as anti-democratic, proposed 24-hour delay on sending e-mail
WASHINGTON – Barack Obama’s nominee for “regulatory czar” has advocated a “Fairness Doctrine” for the Internet that would require opposing opinions be linked and also has suggested angry e-mails should be prevented from being sent by technology that would require a 24-hour cooling off period.
The first part is inane, but I wish there were some way to implement the second part without it being a violation of civil liberties. When you’re pissed off, or just pissed drunk, stay away from the computer. You’ve heard of liquor courage? There is such a thing as e-mail courage, in that you’ll say things to someone else in an e-mail that you wouldn’t say to them over the phone or face-to-face. If you happen to be drunk, it’s only worse. I’ve been down that road, and don’t care to again.
As for his first part, how are the regulars at Daily Kook, AlterNut, Hussytown Post, MyUSSR and Demon-Ratic Underwear, who are given partial credit for the election of Mr. Sunstein’s about-to-be boss, going to like it when they have to stare at links to right-wing blogs and other internet sites?
