The Hottest Day on Record in St. Louis

14 07 2009

Was 55 years ago today.  115 officially.

The Post tells us today how St. Louisans of 55 years ago dealt with the heat.  It shows a picture of a family sleeping out in Forest Park in the open air.  My mother and all of my natural and affinite aunts and uncles, and my maternal grandparents, were living then, and experienced that day.  As a matter of fact, many of them slept out in Forest Park, others went to Carondelet Park.

What jumps out at me is that St. Louisans of 1954 felt safe sleeping out in the open in a city park.  Couldn’t do that today, even if you needed to.  I’m at a loss for an explanation why.
