This Took Nerve to Write

“Why do all you Baylor fans come off as caring more about football than women who are rape victims?”

So asks someone who writes in the American sports media.

Because white American and especially Southern men have been asked for about a century to outsource their patriotism, their nationalism and their tribal energy to squads full of 17-23 give-or-take year-old men who play football, and for the latter half of that time period, the sociopolitical implications of the civil rights movement, racial integration, affirmative action, and (implied) miscegenation have been wrapped up in college football.

That effort has been so successful that professors can use football and the (“black”) men that play it as a weapon against college deans and budget cuts they don’t like.
