Week Two (Guest Post By Puggg)

26 07 2017

Okay, like I promised, here’s the post for the second week, because it’s already been a week tonight since it happened.

I’ll make my status update for tonight the first comment.

I have good news and bad news.

I’ll start with the bad news. He hasn’t gotten any better today compared to yesterday, and yesterday remember he regressed a bit. To say that he didn’t get any worse is being charitable, and truthfully, I think he’s a little less well today compared to yesterday. From what I’ve seen and from what the nurses have told me, all he does during waking hours is read the printed edition of the Post Dispatch, read books, watch a little TV, and they say the only time he ever has the TV on is to watch local news, and nap.

I’d really hate to think that he’s mentally checking out.

The good news is this: As I was heading out, he called me back to tell me one more thing, and in doing so, he called me by my first name. I didn’t catch it at first, but just as soon as I walked out of his room into the hall, it occurred to me that he used my name, and went back in to ask him to back up and say what he said. I told him if he realized what he did, that he used my name, and he said he didn’t think anything of it. Then I had to tell him that this is the first time since he’s been hospitalized and since he returned to consciousness that he has even used my name, recall that before tonight, he didn’t even know or remember my first name.

I’d really like to think that his brain is starting to repair itself.

Your final line is what I was about to reply. There’s some mental re-routing going on. I’m holding good thoughts

Good news on the naming.

Seriously: Wagner.

Grizz had suggested Siegfried Idyll, non-Gould piano transcription, but all I could find on YT was that one (which I also reject).

But here is Knappertsbuch 1963:

Here is Kna’s 1962 Parsifal that comprises my annual spring ritual:

Some prefer 1951, though I prefer this one as it was bequeathed to me in vinyl.

The Prelude and Transformation are acts of healing magic. They will reach Count’s neurons as they forever channel Die Wunde and its healing.

Orolin: Here is the transcription I had in mind:

I know replying to myself is not proper, but here goes: I think this is a better recording: https://youtu.be/9LnAcDmpHJY

Thanks, Grizz, and thanks, Puggg for tolerating this byplay.

Thank you Olorin and Gentle Grizzly for this – it’s wonderful. Hans Knappertsbusch is a true genius and I can’t thank you enough for these links. Really appreciate it. Hope our Blogmeister is listening to these.

My pleasure!

I may have mentioned in past threads: I am a piano student. I started at age 66 (!), and will never be very good; I don’t have the time left to get good. A dream of mine is to be able to play a simplified arrangement of the Siegfried Idyll piano transcription.

Olorin,

I’ve gotta keep this scene going so he can have his blog up and going and vibrant whenever he’s able to start writing again. We need more of this byplay.

He can’t have any connected devices in his hospital room, because they claim it interferes with the hospital’s communications devices, but he can and does have non connected devices, and I’m going to convert that video that Gentle Grizzly links to to audio only and then transfer it to his not internet enabled MP3 player.

Thanks for doing that; ti is one of thise computer tasks I am not sure how to do. How odd that in some hospitals electronics are fine, and others it is not. When I had my knees rebuilt in 2008, I had my laptop and mobile with me; a virtual office. The hospital even provided very good internet.

I’ll be visiting him tonight in about the 6 o’clock hour, and some time this evening, I’ll report back with tonight’s status. But I have several evenings in a row that I won’t be able to visit him because of work, so if I can’t visit him in the morning, and I probably won’t, tonight will be my last chance to visit him until maybe early next week, but I hope by then he gets well enough to be discharged, so what I really hope is that this is my last visit to him while he’s in the hospital.

Back up, I’m heading right now to visit him, driving there after I hit send on this comment.
