SLMPD Residency Requirement Lifted.

Guest post by Puggg

Gov. Parson signed a bill this week which eliminates residency requirements for any of the state’s LEAs, but what it really means in practice is that the SLMPD’s (St. Louis City) residency requirement is now gone.

What do we think of that, puppies?  Because I can think of one reason why it’s may not be such a good thing.

Alright Dan

Can I break in with this? Who wasn’t thinking that this would what it would be when we first heard about it?

Finally the good citizens of East St Louis can fulfill their dream of being a po-leece in Real St Louis.

Don’t worry, I won’t spoil it, but once you state what I know you’re thinking, I’ll respond with what you know is my counter.

I’ll say now that, for as long as I can remember, the standard public argument against the RR is that it hurts recruiting. The problem is that the end of the RR is now coming way too late to help. Whatever help the repeal of the RR was to recruiting, May 24 and the aftermath has pushed the wind the other way ten times as much.

Note: I’ve always opposed the RR for as long as I’ve known of it.

Before this gets too out of the way, I think the ending of the residency requirement is not such a good thing, because I think it’s a play for affirmative action on the SLMPD. I think by now that most black people who would want to be on the SLMPD live in places like North County.

And you know my response from our private e-mails. It might accidentally work out that way, but, from what I can see, the residency rule lifting came from a bill in the state legislature, passed and signed into law. And I bet that if someone drills down, knowing Jefferson City like I did, that it was nearly a party line vote, Republicans for, Democrats against. If this was an AA ploy from the outset, then a few black Democrats would have voted for it. The real motivation here is that the SLPOA used its influence over the state Republican Party to get it repealed because SLPOA members don’t want have to keep paying for private/parochial school tuition.
