Sweden

Weekly Standard reviews a book popping the leftist bubble about Scandinavia.

Money paragraph:

Instead, Sanandaji shows, the root of Scandinavian success can largely be found in culture. These countries, and Sweden in particular, have historically had remarkably high levels of social trust, family values, a strong sense of work ethic, and social cohesion. The notion of the “Protestant work ethic” goes back far longer than the modern welfare state. Scholars like Max Weber, Sanandaji shows, long ago noted that the Protestant countries of northern Europe had an overall higher living standard and economic success than most. The often-celebrated equality of Scandinavian countries, too, began well before the welfare state was developed.

Strange that, because WS is a #cuckservative slick, pretty much through and through.

WARNING!  NEOREACTIONARY TRIANGULATION AHEAD!

I take a slightly different view.  The typical American liberal thinks that the big Swedish welfare state is the independent variable and Scandinavian success is the dependent variable.  This writer in WS thinks that the welfare state is a take-or-leave proposition.  My view is that the independent variable is Scandinavian-Nordic racial-ethnic-cultural evolution and relative isolation in a very cold climate, the dependent variables are Scandinavian success and the big Scandi-Nordic welfare states.  Plain words, I don’t think the welfare state is purely incidental, but unlike libs, I think Scandinavian success caused the welfare state, not the other way around.

Immigration Scandal

3 06 2015

Birmingham, Alabama

Some think it’s a welfare scandal, and it is.  Some think it’s a terrorism scandal, and it is.

But more than that, it’s an immigration scandal:

Those arrested in today’s raids are: Jowher Almnasoob, Abdulrahman Alqublani, Ismail Hassan Elnaham, Saleh Yahya Rowaid, Ramzi Jowher Ali Almansoob, Mujahed Jowher Ali Almansoob, Bashir Abosaleh Mohamed, Fouad Zamzami, Muneer Zindani, Sufyan Saleh, Mansoor Almansoob, Audrey Morris, Jerry Brown, Keith Lee Lucas, Travis Wayne Holmes, Murad Nooruddin and Mable Olympia Kirksey.

What are people with these kinds of mystery meat names doing in my country, and in the case of some of you, your beloved Alabama?

Also curious is why the local blacks who sold their EBT cards to said mystery meat aren’t caught up in this dragnet.

WaPo:

Majority of U.S. public school students are in poverty

For the first time in at least 50 years, a majority of U.S. public school students come from low-income families, according to a new analysis of 2013 federal data, a statistic that has profound implications for the nation.

The Southern Education Foundation reports that 51 percent of students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade were eligible under the federal program for free and reduced-price lunches in the 2012-2013 school year. The lunch program is a rough proxy for poverty, but the explosion in the number of needy children in the nation’s public classrooms is a recent phenomenon that has been gaining attention among educators, public officials and researchers.

Or, it could mean that eligibility rules for the school lunch program have been made more generous, or they’re being ignored, here in the Era of Hope and Change, just to be able to sign more students up, to hedge politically against “budget cuts” (i.e. reductions in the spending increases) of the school lunch program.

The data show poor students spread across the country, but the highest rates are concentrated in Southern and Western states. In 21 states, at least half the public school children were eligible for free and reduced-price lunches — ranging from Mississippi, where almost three out of every four students were from low-income families, to Illinois, where one out of every two was low-income.

Meaning black and Hispanic.  In the Deep South, the public schools are even more black than the population demographics of that age group would suggest, because so many white students are wisely kept away from the blackboard jungles, and have been ever since Black Monday in May 1954.

One more thing:  The evidence and statistical regression coefficients might belie me, but I’ve always been bothered by the use of involvement in the school lunch program as a proxy for academic deficiency.

UPDATE 1/17

This suggests that at the very least, NSLP participation rates are not good indicators for poverty rates.

Ferguson

P-D:

While the focus in Ferguson has mainly revolved around law enforcement, Missouri Treasurer Clint Zweifel on Thursday asked for a review of low-income housing policies.

“Of particular concern for residents in the Ferguson areas and surrounding communities is the disproportionately high concentration of low-income housing in North St. Louis County,” Zweifel wrote in a letter addressed to Kip Stetzler, executive director of the Missouri Housing Development Commission.

To some people, this is a feature, not a bug.  Their being in Ferguson and North County means that they’re not any other place, in particular, the city.

Let me put it to you this way:  Lots of people in Chicago and New York and Washington, D.C. are perfectly happy with “high concentrations of low income housing” in South Suburban Cook County, Westchester County and Prince Georges County, respectively.

In recent years, half of all police calls in Ferguson came from a cluster of complexes that include Park Ridge, Northwinds, Oakmont Townhomes, Versailles Apartments and Canfield Green, where Michael Brown was shot by police in August.

The Fergaza Strip.

Why, Jay?

Ferguson

MONG to the FerGaza Strip.

Why?  So they can stand around and have things thrown at them, Molotov cocktails thrown at them, shots fired at them?

Remember, Jay, you removed the 12-agency force out of there because they were too “militarized,” and now you’re sending in people whose paychecks are Pentagon-signed.

This thing is going to fester for awhile, especially since for about the next two weeks, we’re going to get the summer heat we’ve largely avoided so far.  Except there’s one way to make this stop when nobody has the guts to let the people with badges do what it takes.  The first of next month is two weeks from today, and maybe Nixon could put a hold on the welfare benefits for everyone in those apartment farms until this shit quiets down.  That would definitely work, because then all the EBT black queens who can’t control their sons will suddenly find a way to control their sons.  Except you know Nixon won’t do it and Obama would throw a fit if he did.
