Just About Reich

CNN: “ZOMG REICH~!!!!1!1!11”

Wouldn’t have expected anything but historical ignorance here.

The Empire (1871-1918), was and still today sometimes known as and called “Zweites Reich” (“Second Reich”). The first being the Holy Roman Empire. The Empire was and is also called “Deutsches Kaiserreich” (“German Kaiser realm”). “Kaiser” itself alluding to “Caesar.” In Latin spoken at the time of the Caesars, “Caesar” was pronounced as “Kaiser” is today.

And of course this ad is referring to “1871,” and the Second Reich.

Still today in modern High German, France is called “Frankreich” (“realm of the Frank”), Austria is called “Österreich” (“eastern realm”), the UK is called “Vereinigtes Königreich von Großbritannien und Nordirland” (“Unified Kingdom of Great Britain and North Ireland”), and a kingdom in general is the aforementioned “Königreich” (“realm of the king”).

The Lord’s Prayer. Some versions just say “Reich” without the “König.”

Cultural note: The seventh and eighth lines in English have two different ways of saying it: “Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us” as one option, or “Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors” as the other. What this demonstrates is the loose continuum between trespassing and economic indebtedness. Here, you only need one version, with “Schuld,” because “Schuld” means both debt and guilt/trespass. That by itself demonstrates that Germans have a deep rooted historical moral aversion to financial and economic indebtedness. Which is why the homeownership rate is much lower here than in America, ceteris paribus, because they don’t want the “guilt/debt” of a long term mortgage.

Vater unser im Himmel
Geheiligt werde dein Name
Dein Königreich komme
Dein Wille geschehe

It's your dime, spill it. And also...NO TROLLS ALLOWED~!
